2014 GBWGC Winter Trophy

TOURNAMENT RECORD!

...and then there were five. Five of the best met at the Binningup clubhouse to battle for the BIG ONE – the 2014 Winter Trophy. Fearless, steady Tom streeted all comers with a sensational three nines after a slow start on day one – 12 points, followed by 24, 21 and 18. His winning aggregate of 45 was a record for the Winter Trophy. Truly the Little Master!
Jacko, giving up an 18 hole handicap of 10 strokes, put together some consistent golf for a great 36 point total. Ron was tipped into third place on a count-back (based on his lower Binningup home course score). His 9 point score on day 3 at his specialty course did raise questions of ‘tanking’ – especially when he said “tank you very much” in his podium speech.
Macca managed consistent fair average quality rounds for his 32 points though he did pick up the Captain’s yellow duck award for three balls into the lake on the final round. The other Graham hit a few monster drives but had an unusual NAGA performance. The high point for Walks was winning up the double at Sanctuary – the Captain’s shovel and spade to commemorate his bunker work and the goggles and snorkel set for his lake splashes.
GREAT EFFORT TOM JOSEPH for your first Winter Trophy win and record aggregate.

DAY 1: Binningup ‘Lakewood Shores’ 2:40pm Friday 22 August 2014
Good weather, slowish greens the course in great condition and as a bonus we played as a five-some.

Jacko played quality golf for a round of 46 strokes and 18 points. Ron looked like Ron of Binningups Past  for 17 points but then the auditors discovered an unfortunate handicapping error and the 17 points became 15 and his silver medal became a tarnished bronze. Macca had just 6 points after 6 holes but then slithered into second place on count-back with 9 points over the last three holes.

This was Tom’s warm-up round (he doesn’t get out much these days) for just 12 points. Walks never quite warmed up with 11 points after playing 54 holes in practice over the previous week. Let’s just say he was over-trained.

DAY 2: Sanctuary 8.45am Saturday 23 August 2014
Good weather again and we luckily managed to play throughout  the 18 holes as a fivesome. The course was in great shape which is more than we could say for TJ.

However Tom played an exceptional round and despite his lack of preparation did everything right – out in 45 for 24 points, then in for 48 and 21 points despite wiping the 18th. Jacko was out in 48 for 16 points and back in with 46 strokes and 18 points. Excellent golf from both. And how good was Ronzo? He matched Jacko’s round with 94 strokes for 20 points and 21 points. Had the Master Blaster returned? (Maybe you should check the final round before jumping to a hasty conclusion).

The scintillating actions of Day 2's top 2
That classic Macca follow-through is to be immortalised in print

Because the Phantom and Macca wiped numerous holes – 9 between them – your reporter cannot provide stroke scores for them but let’s just say Walks had a total of 21 points for a double NAGA and the Pace Cracker just 32 points. Yes, they are 18 hole totals. It must be said that Walks was competitive on the long drives and Macca won an LD with a 65 meter slog that everyone bettered, though without ending up on the fairway.

DAY 3: Binningup ‘Lakewood Shores’ 9.00am Sunday 24 August 2014
Picture the setting for the final round: three of our greats – Tom, Jacko and Ronzo - level on aggregates of 36, with nine holes to play. To make it even more memorable we were able to play as a five-some again! Weather fine, and the track fast – they had managed to cut the greens sometime after our Friday game. Oh, and the two Gras were 13 and 4 points behind the three golfers...

Walks had a bad golfing weekend – perhaps his stance needed adjusting.

Though Jacko had a brave round of 13 points (54 strokes), Super Tom scored a fine 18 points to run away with the Winter Trophy for the first time. He rushed back to the clubhouse to check if it was an all-time record... and of course it was!
Ron’s 9 point round should not be mentioned in public, and certainly not on the Internet, but his aggregate remained a creditable 36 points for a podium finish. Macca dribbled around for 3 points and no improvement to his overnight score. Walks showed more in his final round for 14 points but a second successive NAGA in the Winter Trophy.

Other Weekend Activities

The Black Tie dinner is a highlight of the weekend social activities and this one had some chart-toppers:

  • Superb cuisine again by our resident chefs Ron and Chris. Ron was very complimentary on the way the steaks were cooked.  (P.S. Tom was not allowed anywhere near the bbq);
  • The Dalbys sponsored the evening attire of the Away President - sponsorship of the Black Tie event a first for the club. The result was laid bare for all to see . . .;
  • Ronzo presented much valued keepsakes garnered from his recent European gadabout – a scorecard for the Old Course and a pencil from the hallowed precincts of the Home of Golf – St. Andrews Links;
  • We toasted absence friends:
    1.  those minding their families (Dalbs - Lea, Dennis - Barb, Squancy - new grand child, Steve - Hawthorn)
    2.  those minding their own business (Litts).
  • Winifred McLennan on piano had everyone foot-tappin' as he exhibited his skill at tinkling the ivories;

It is interesting to note that the combined group get together after the presentations could not come up with any EBIs for Ronzo after careful consideration...pointing to the successful format that Ron has crafted for the club. Many thanks to our Senior Sponsor for this, our eighth, and still successful Winter Trophy weekend.
